Problem
The power supply (plug-in power supply) has been connected to the MX530/MX880 router and the power LED on the router is lit normally.
However, the router no longer works properly and has one or more of the following problems:
- There may have been frequent unexplained mobile disconnections recently, the cause of which had nothing to do with the 230 volt power supply, the SIM card or the mobile network. Example:
- The router no longer boots, so that neither a mobile connection is established nor a login to the WebUI is possible.
- The LAN3 LED flashes quickly, all other LEDs (field strength, connection status) are off, see Video example (mp4).
Cause
The plug-in power supply unit is probably defective and no longer supplies the MX530/MX880 with sufficient power. Especially when using the plug-in power supply in particularly warm or cold locations, such malfunctions may occur after some time.
The power LED may still light up, but the MX530/MX880 will no longer boot. Depending on its condition, a defective power supply unit can also cause the router to boot, but then to stop again a short time later. In this case, the mobile connection is established and interrupted again a short time later. The usage overview shows frequent and sometimes irregular mobile phone interruptions.
Note that even with a defective plug-in power supply unit, 9-12 volts are often still measured at the output, although the plug-in power supply unit is damaged and no longer supplies the router with sufficient power.
Solution for MX880
Use a new plug-in power supply or, especially in very warm or cold locations, another suitable power supply.
The plug-in power supply (9V / 1.0A) can be operated in a temperature range of 0 to 40 degrees Celsius.
The industrial plug attached to the supplied plug-in power supply can be removed by means of a screw terminal and a suitable power supply can be connected to it.
The router can also be supplied with the optionally available mdex DIN rail power supply (mdex Hutschienennetzteil), which can be operated in a temperature range of -20 to + 60 degrees Celsius.
- loosen the screws on the green terminal from the power supply unit.
.
- attach the wires of the external power supply to the green terminal and make sure the polarity is correct!
Further notes:
- The allowable DC voltage range of the MX880 is between 9-30 volts.
- The average power consumption of the MX880 router is max. 7 watts.
MX880 practical values depending on router load: | Power peak (W) 1 | Average power consumption (W) |
Sleep mode + LTE connected + no devices connected to LAN + WiFi switched on: | 6.615 1 2 | 1.815 2 |
High CPU load + LTE data transmission at maximum speed + 1 device connected to the LAN port + data transmission via WiFi: | 8.123 1 2 | 4.049 2 |
High CPU load + LTE data transmission at maximum speed + 2 devices connected to LAN ports + data transmission via WiFi: | 8.492 1 2 | 4.321 2 |
High CPU load + LTE data transmission at maximum speed + 4 devices connected to LAN ports + data transmission via WiFi: | 8.496 1 2 | 4.346 2 |
