Teltonika offers current firmware versions for the router and, if necessary, for the modem. The modem and router firmware can be updated independently.
1. Update router firmware
2. Update modem firmware
Please note the following information before performing the update:
- Executing the firmware update is always at your own risk. Please note that modem or firmware updates can - in rare cases - fail, especially when carried out remotely (via a mobile connection). The execution of an update should therefore be carefully considered.
- The current settings in the router should be converted and thus retained if a modem or firmware update is carried out correctly. However, we recommend downloading and saving a backup file of the router configuration under System Backup beforehand. This will allow you to revert to the old firmware version and configuration should any problems occur.
- Additional notes for Legay firmware (version R_00.01.xx / R_00.06.xx):
- For routers with legacy firmware, we recommend updating to the latest legacy firmware. The legacy firmware will no longer receive any new functions, but critical security gaps will still be fixed.
- When upgrading the Legacy firmware to newer version R_00.07.xx, the router settings should actually be converted automatically. This process may not always work smoothly, especially with older or more complex configurations.
- Especially when using an mdex OpenVPN client (mdex fixed.IP+ / public.IP via OpenVPN or mdex mobile. LAN) and an mdex EASY SIM / KPN SIM card, the MTU 1500 must be set in the router mobile settings (if different), see FAQ Setting the MTU of an mdex SIM card !
- Especially when using SIM cards with low inclusive volumes, please note that the automatic update consumes data. For a local update, it is better to transfer the firmware file to the router as a file or in case of using "FOTA" connect the router to the Internet via the WAN socket.
1. Update router firmware
The router firmware can either be transferred to the router via a file or executed automatically via "FOTA":
Option 1: Firmware update via file (manually)
Option 2: Firmware update via FOTA (automatically)
Option 1: Firmware update via file (manually)
- Download the current firmware file for the router model under Firmware.
- Note for routers with old legacy firmware (R_00.01 / R_00.06):
Especially when using an mdex OpenVPN client (mdex fixed.IP+ / public.IP via OpenVPN or mdex mobile. LAN) and an mdex EASY SIM / KPN SIM card, the MTU 1500 must be set in the router mobile settings (if different), see FAQ Setting the MTU of an mdex SIM card !
- Make the following settings under System Firmware Update Firmware and select the firmware file by clicking on BROWSE.
Update from: | File |
Keep settings: | on (= configuration is retained) |
- The file is transferred to the router. Then start the update process by clicking on PROCEED.
- The firmware update takes approx. 5 minutes. The router is offline during this time.
- The power supply must not be switched off during the update process!
- After completion, the router is automatically restarted and the mobile data connection is re-established.
Option 2: Firmware update via FOTA (automatically)
With this "FOTA" method, the router automatically checks with Teltonika whether new firmware is available. New versions can then be downloaded and installed automatically. This function is not available for some router models.
- Activate automatical software check in the router. (For routers with mdex pre-configuration, FOTA is deactivated for security reasons).
To do this, switch on the Enable FOTA option under System Firmware FOTA Configruation:
- Note for routers with old legacy firmware (R_00.01 / R_00.06):
Especially when using an mdex OpenVPN client (mdex fixed.IP+ / public.IP via OpenVPN or mdex mobile. LAN) and an mdex EASY SIM / KPN SIM card, the MTU 1500 must be set in the router mobile settings (if different), see FAQ Setting the MTU of an mdex SIM card !
- Now the router checks under System Firmware Update Firmware at the Teltonika server whether updates are available.
- If a newer version than currently installed is displayed under Firmware version, the following settings must be made for the automatic update:
Update from: | Server |
Firmware type: | Device Firmware |
Keep settings: | on (= configuration is retained) |
- Click on the Update button to download the current firmware. Then start the update process by clicking on PROCEED.
- The firmware update takes approx. 5 minutes. The router is offline during this time.
- The power supply must not be switched off during the update process!
- After completion, the router is automatically restarted and the mobile data connection is re-established.
2. Update modem firmware
The modem firmware of some Teltonika routers can be updated locally or remotely. To update the modem firmware, the router requires an Internet connection to the Teltonika server. This can be a mobile data connection via the SIM card or an Internet connection connected via the WAN socket. This update function is not available for some router models.
The following steps are required to update the modem firmware of the Teltonika router:
- Activate automatic software check in the router. (For routers with mdex pre-configuration, FOTA is deactivated for security reasons).
To do this, switch on the Enable FOTA option under System Firmware FOTA Configruation:
- Now the router checks under System Firmware Update Firmware at the Teltonika server whether updates are available.
- If a new modem firmware is available (Internal modem: Update available) and the modem update is to be started, the following settings must be made:
Update from: | Server |
Firmware type: | Modem firmware |
- Click on the Update button to start the modem update.
- The modem update takes approx. 5 minutes. During this time, the mobile data connection is offline.
- The power supply must not be switched off during the update process!
- After completion, the mobile data connection will be restored.
- Check the status under System Firmware Update Firmware.
If "Internal mode" is now displayed "No update available", the modem update was successful:
